Small Bites

A post-holiday confession (and Gramercy Tavern Gingerbread recipe)

January 7, 2012

This Christmas found yours truly wanting to spice things up with a holiday bundt cake, using a recipe my mother had recently made with great success from one of her Gourmet magazines. After the yearly ritual of going to see my favorite holiday window displays at Bergdorf’s and Tiffany’s, two winning examples of (more…)

Brooklyn chicks

June 10, 2011

And I mean that literally. This week friends Martha, Neil, and Lindsay invited me to their house to meet the new arrivals: four chicks, who will eventually join the egg-laying adult hens living in their Brooklyn backyard. The little guys were surprisingly entertaining – they mistook loose threads for worms (which apparently they also (more…)

You say octopuses, I say octopi

May 14, 2011

This week, I managed to eat octopus twice in one day at two of my favorite Manhattan restaurants: the seared octopus, with blood orange and ramps at Maialino (pictured below), and the charred Spanish octopus with Greek salad, and fried chickpeas at Market Table. I love grilled octopus, and highly recommend both dishes. This (more…)

A few weeks ago, I happened to be working with a French colleague who was dining at Blue Hill Stone Barns the evening of our shoot.  After I told her of my interest in chef Dan Barber, and how I had been in touch with him about featuring his West Village location on (more…)

Paris

September 27, 2010

A quick stopover in Paris today on my way to an assignment in Africa took me to a fascinating Japanese patisserie called Toraya, in the 8th arrondissement.  I had lunch with some colleagues there (to the sound of recorded bird song), and though I did not sneak into the restaurant’s kitchen to steal (more…)

Anthony Bourdain

September 3, 2010

Thanks to a friend who ran into Anthony Bourdain while dining at Dublin’s Chophouse, I have just received this great dedication and copy of Bourdain’s book Nasty Bits!  I am a big fan of Bourdain’s biting humor (pun intended) and am excited at the chance to include him on this blog, however remotely. (more…)
