The North East Kitchen blog

December 19, 2015

I am pleased to announce the recent launch of The North East kitchen – a blog that continues my exploration of, and interest in food culture with a the broader scope of the North Eastern US. After my initial forays in Maine nearly two years ago, it has become my new home. As a result I have enjoyed learning about a whole new culinary landscape, which I (more…)

Tina’s Magnificent Meringues

December 24, 2014

As many of you know, I have been sharing my time between New York and Maine since this last spring when my life took an unexpected turn. As a transplanted New Yorker in a beautiful, but bewilderingly quiet place, the last two months seemed out of balance: I had started shooting jobs in Maine, taking a brief respite from my (more…)

A post-holiday confession (and Gramercy Tavern Gingerbread recipe)

January 7, 2012

This Christmas found yours truly wanting to spice things up with a holiday bundt cake, using a recipe my mother had recently made with great success from one of her Gourmet magazines. After the yearly ritual of going to see my favorite holiday window displays at Bergdorf’s and Tiffany’s, two winning examples of which you can see here: a bundt (more…)

Brooklyn chicks

June 10, 2011

And I mean that literally. This week friends Martha, Neil, and Lindsay invited me to their house to meet the new arrivals: four chicks, who will eventually join the egg-laying adult hens living in their Brooklyn backyard. The little guys were surprisingly entertaining – they mistook loose threads for worms (which apparently they also do with each others’ toes!!), and kept (more…)

Kitchen Portraits

May 20, 2011

Fellow photographer Malika Cosme recently invited me to sit for a portrait as part of her series Kitchen Portraits.  Given the happy kitchen coincidence, I had to oblige!  The next post will feature the same kitchen being used as, well, a kitchen – stay tuned.

You say octopuses, I say octopi

May 14, 2011

This week, I managed to eat octopus twice in one day at two of my favorite Manhattan restaurants: the seared octopus, with blood orange and ramps at Maialino (pictured below), and the charred Spanish octopus with Greek salad, and fried chickpeas at Market Table. I love grilled octopus, and highly recommend both dishes. This post was to be entitled “Happy Octopi”, (more…)

Cinco de Mayo at Zaragoza

May 6, 2011

Hoping everyone had a happy Cinco De Mayo! After a long day’s work, I knew I would find a celebration at this East Village Mexican deli on Avenue A and 13th. Sure enough, Los Gorriones played for hours and a neighborhood fiesta ensued. The carnitas tacos with salsa verde weren’t bad, either – salud!

Estancia Vik

April 23, 2011

While on assignment in Uruguay this last week I stayed at the Estancia Vik, which I had photographed for Air France Madame magazine when the hotel first opened in 2009 (photographs from this piece can be see on my website).  It is rare that I have the chance to return to a location I photographed, especially one I enjoyed so (more…)

Restaurant Florent

April 12, 2011

While looking through my odd collection of postcards, I came upon a great one from the former Meat Packing District bistro, Florent.  While I though this souvenir deserved to see the light of day on New York Kitchen, this New York Times article by Frank Bruni does a better job than I ever would at summing up the history of (more…)

Blue Hill at Stone Barns dinner

March 31, 2011

A few weeks ago, I happened to be working with a French colleague who was dining at Blue Hill Stone Barns the evening of our shoot.  After I told her of my interest in chef Dan Barber, and how I had been in touch with him about featuring his West Village location on this blog, I was invited to join (more…)
