Brown cafe

May 30, 2010

in Kitchens,Lower East Side

This small restaurant serves progressive American food, with an emphasis on local, seasonal and organic ingredients. Its chef, Gregory Torrech, has been cooking for the last fourteen years alongside the likes of Todd English, and Neil Ferguson. He describes the food at Brown as being simple and fresh, made using French classical technique. The Bavette is one of their signature dishes. Brown’s owner, the Oaxaca-native chef Alejandro Alcocer has built a community of businesses along Hester Street. The space next door to Brown houses his catering company, Green, which is downstairs from Orange epicerie, a space that is primarily used for private dinners. Out front antique bikes are sold, and on the weekends, the crew has a food stand at the Hester Steet Fair. 61 Hester Street www.greenbrownorange.com
